Hot Water
From NRVRA
The immersion heater should be kept on at all times. The heater keeps water in the tank hot at around 75C. This water stays in the tank and doesn't go anywhere - it is used to heat a cold water supply to 50C (ish). This does mean that if you have people staying over and you all take hot showers one after another then you'll put a high loading on the boiler. The immersion heater will try to keep up but you will eventually lower the hot water temperature.
However there are things that can reduce performance. Check that the boiler is not overflowing (you can check this by seeing if water is flowing down the pipe that has an open black section in it). This means that the autofill feature is broken and you will essentailly be putting hot water down the drain.
